LocationThe Grand River Academy is located on a 200-acre campus in the rural town of Austinburg, in northeastern Ohio’s Western Reserve. The campus is 1 hour east of Cleveland and 2 hours west of Pittsburgh.
Background and PhilosophyThe Academy is nationally recognized as one of the few remaining nonmilitary, nonsectarian boys’ boarding schools in the United States. Although the Grand River Academy is committed to single-sex education, in response to parents’ requests that their daughters also have an opportunity to benefit from the Academy’s unique program, the six-week summer academy is a coeducational boarding program. The summer program is fundamentally designed as an extension of the Academy’s winter school. The goal is to prepare students, including those not working to their potential, for a successful college education. During summer, as in the winter session, attention is paid to physical, emotional, and social growth in a community where concern for each individual’s needs is emphasized. Each day is structured in order to provide students with a harmonious blend of academics and fun activities.
Program OfferingsDuring the six-week summer academy, a student can strengthen an academic area or investigate a new subject. The program emphasizes small classes (2–5 students per class) and individual attention. The Academy typically offers most college-preparatory courses each summer. Students may complete only 1 credit each summer. Written reports from teachers, with percentage grades, summarize individual student progress every week. Students attend class for 4 hours each morning; several activity options are available each afternoon. As in the regular school year, all teachers live on campus and are available for extra help in the afternoon and during a supervised evening study period.
EnrollmentStudents enroll from throughout the United States and several other countries. The Academy offers a diverse population with roughly an equal number of boys and girls. Applicants of any race, color, or national or ethnic origin are welcome.
